Mission

The Doane University Chapter of the AAUP is an advocacy chapter recognized by the national AAUP organization. As such, we support the policies and goals of the national organization which are guided by the national organization’s mission statement.

Mission Statement of the American Association of University Professors

The mission of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is to advance academic freedom and shared governance; to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education; to promote the economic security of faculty, academic professionals, graduate students, post‐doctoral fellows, and all those engaged in teaching and research in higher education; to help the higher education community organize to make our goals a reality; and to ensure higher education’s contribution to the common good. Founded in 1915, the AAUP has helped to shape American higher education by developing the standards and procedures that maintain quality in education and academic freedom in this country’s colleges and universities.

Our local chapter works on issues related to academic freedom, shared governance, and economic security for faculty by collecting and sharing information on these issues, offering educational programming to the Doane community, publishing position statements on issues of local concern, and interacting with the Nebraska State Conference of the AAUP and the national AAUP community.

In accordance with the AAUP One Faculty campaign, we invite all those whose appointments consist primarily of teaching or research activities conducted at a professional level, including tenure‐track and non-tenure-track faculty, full‐time and part‐time faculty, and most librarians, research and teaching assistants, and postdocs to join the Doane University Chapter of the AAUP. See the Join/Renew page for more information.
